Jagjit singh was an iconic Indian Ghazal singer, music director and composer. He was known as ” The Ghazal King “. He sung in many languages. Jagjit Singh is credited for the revival and popularity of the ghazal. Jagjit singh was born on 8 February 1941 in Sriganganagar, Rajasthan. His father’s name was sardra Amar singh dhiman, He was a surveyor of Public Works Department of Government. His mother’s name was Sardarni Bachchan Kaur. Jagjit has four sisters and 2 brother. Jagjit studied from Khalsa High School, Sri Ganganagar. He got an Arts degree from DAV College. In 1961, he started his professional career by starting the singing and composition work at All India Radio (AIR) Jalandhar Station. Later, he studied in Kurukshetra University, Haryana for obtaining a master’s degree in history.
He learned music from an obscure master of Indian classical music, Pandit Chaganlal Sharma and later from the famous Maoist Jamal Khan. During his teenage years, he performed on stage and composed the music. In March 1965, he moved to Mumbai. He initially worked as a singer of Advertising Jingles and later proceeded for playback singing.

Jagjit Singh came in the film world with a dream of playback. In those days Talat Mehmood, Mohammed Rafi Saheb used to like the songs of the people. But he did not give up and released his first album, ‘The Unforgibables (1976)’. This album was hit. Jagjit bought the first flat in Mumbai after the success of the album. After that, He made several albums such as The Latest, Someone Somewhere, Mirage, Silsilay and others. When Jagjit Singh started singing Ghazals like movie songs, the common man started showing interest in Ghazal. But the eyebrows of Ghazal’s experts were screwed. They did not come to the purists of Jagjit Singh’s style.
In addition to the album, he also started singing in the films. He has sung the hit Ghazal in many films such as Avishkaar, Ek Baar Kaho, Prem Geet, Arth, Saath Saath, Zulf Ke Saye Saye, Bhavna, Aashiana, Abhishek, Mirza Ghalib (TV serial), Billoo Badshah, Nargis, Khalnayak, Dushman, Sarfarosh, Tum Bin, Vadh, Joggers’ Park, Veer-Zaara, Umar and Tum Bin 2.
On May 10, 2007, in a program organized in the Central Hall of the Parliament of India, in the presence of many political and diplomatic publishers, Jagjit Singh presented the famous Ghazal ‘Lagta nahin hai dil mera’ of Bahadur Shah Zafar for commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Indian Rebellion.
Based on Beyond Time, the biography of Jagjit Singh was released in 2012. This biography was edited by Asharani Mathur. On the journey of Jagjit Singh’s life journey, a biopic documentary has been made called ‘Kaagaz Ki Kashti’, which broke the norms and revolutionized the ghazal landscape. In 2011, Jagjit Singh visited the UK and was supposed to perform with Ghulam Ali in Mumbai. But on September 23, 2011, he became brain haemorrh. He was in Coma for more than two weeks and died on 10 October at Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai. The next day, he was cremated at Chandanwadi crematorium near Mumbai’s Marine Lines. Many tributes have been given after his death.
He has won many awards for his brilliant performance such as Padma Bhushan, Sahitya Academy Award, Sahitya Kala Academy Award, State Government of Rajasthan posthumously award, Sangeet Natak Academy Award, Dayawati Modi Award, Teacher’s Lifetime Achievement Award and Lata Mangeshkar Samman.
