Savitribai Phule’s Personal Life, husband ,Career And Other information

Savitribai Jyotirao Phule was an Indian social reformer, academician and poetess of Maharashtra. She is considered the first female teacher of India. During the nineteenth century, she played an important role in women’s education and empowerment. Savitribai is credited with establishing the first girl school in Pune in Bhheda Wada with her husband Jyotirao Phule. she worked to eliminate people’s discrimination and unfair treatment on the basis of caste and gender.  she considered an important person in the social reform movement in Maharashtra.

Personal life :-

Savitribai Phule was born in 1831 in a farmer family in Naigaon, Satara. In those days, girls got married early, so following the prevailing customs, Savitribai married for nine years got married in 1840 with 12 years of Jyotirao Phule. Jyotirao became a thinker, writer, social activist and anti-caste social reformer. He took training in the institution of Ms. Farer in Ahmednagar. Jyotirao stood firmly in favor of Savitribai in all his social endeavors. Savitribai and Jyotirao did not have any children. she took delivery of a widow Brahmin lady Kashi Bai to her house and adopted her child Yashwant. She made Yashwant Rao a doctor.

Career :-

Savitribai Jyotirao Phule was an Indian social reformer and poet. With her husband, Jyotirao Phule, she has done important work in enhancing women’s rights in India. In 1848 she founded the country’s first woman school in Pune. Savitribai became the first teacher of the school. Savitribai Phule was in strong opposition to casteism, apartheid and gender discrimination.  Jyotirao and Savitribai later started schools for the children of Mangal and Mahar castes, who were considered untouchables.

she opposed the prevailing custom of cutting the hair of the widows and she was successful in organizing a barbers strike in Mumbai and Pune. she used to do all these work specifically for the development of women in British India. It was the tradition of Hindus in the 19th Century marriage at an early age. That is why many women at that time became widows in a short time, and according to religious traditions women were not remarried.

The three schools run by Savitribai Phule were closed till 1858. Impressed by the circumstances, Jyotirao and Savitribai took the responsibility of educating the people of the oppressed communities, along with Fatima Shaikh. Savitribai opened 18 schools and taught children of different castes. When Savitribai used to go to teach the girls, people on the road used to fend for them like dirt, mud, dung. Savitribai used to carry a sari in his bag and reached the school and changed the sari made filthy. Inspiration to keep walking on your path very well.

In 1863, Savitribai and Jyotirao established a center for the protection of women, and named their center “Balhatya Pratibandhak Griha,”. It was established so that pregnant Brahmin widows and rape victims could bring their children to a safe and secure place, thus reducing the rate of infant mortality while preventing the killing of widows.

Death :-

Savitribai Phule and adoptive son Yashwantrao had opened the hospital to treat the patients in the global level in 1897. Her hospital is located in Saadna Mala in Hadapsar, Pune. Her hospital is located in an open place. In her hospital, Savitribai took care of every single patient himself, provided her with various facilities. In this way, after treating patients, she herself became a patient. And she  died on 10 March 1897. Savitribai Phule was the first Indian social reformer of the 19th century and was an important contributor to the development of women’s rights in India.

Legacy :-

In 1983, Pune City Corporation created a memorial for Savitribai. On 10 March 1998 a postal stamp was issued in her honor. In 2015, the name of Pune University was changed to Savitribai Phule, Pune University in her honor. The search engine Google celebrated their 188th birth anniversary on January 3, 2019 with Google doodles. Savitribai Phule Award is given to women social reformers in Maharashtra.
